Not because she's gorgeous and walking perfection from her lips to the impeccable shape of her legs... which of course she is.
Also not because she has grace, attitude and poise like not other... which of course she does. I can't imagine anyone else (still active in the industry) owning that catwalk like she did in Fashion, even if the movie had issues I can't even begin to rant about. I never would have made it past the first drugs and alcohol cliche had Priyanka not been the real show-stopper of the movie.
Surely it's also not because she's an exquisite dancer, who genuinely seems to enjoy shaking it even when she doesn't do very complex moves, and who's certainly not scared of looking goofy once in a while either.
Though I do wish she would dance more: I mean, is it really too much to ask for each of the 12 avatars in What's Your Rashee to have a proper dance? Sheesh!... Then again, the dancing is probably the least of one's concerns when thinking about What's Your Rashee, considering that was the movie when Ashutosh Gowariker decided he would do a tutorial for the world on how to best waste a good idea and some great talent (and by great talent I am referring to Gowariker and Priyanka, not to the man with less charisma than a box of Cheerios, also known as Harman Baweja).
Oh well, I'll always have Saiyaan Re.
But back to why it's scary that I like her so much...
Definitely not because she's a good actress, which she really is. No one, and I mean no one could have rescued the disastrous attempt at telling a story in Anjaana Anjaani. Calling it a story might actually be misleading now that I think about it. Better to call it a "kaleidoscope of fail", which actually kind of rhymes with the many failed suicide attempts that the hero and heroine expect us to buy. But Priyanka and Ranbir sold me that DVD the moment it sees the light of day, and it's because they're having so much fun with those roles that it is a joy to just watch them... act.
To think that I didn't even break my laptop while watching Krrish, though God knows even at the peak of my irrational and completely delusional admiration for Hrithik (which thankfully I have been cured of since) I didn't think that was a good movie.
I even made it through Drona... which out of respect for her and Abhishek, I won't even start on...
And this gets me to exactly why having a crush on Priyanka scares me. Because the only good movies I have seen with her have been Kaminey and... um... uh... er... right, well, Kaminey. Ok, that's a lie, I also liked Salaam-e-Ishq, but despite being the most fun character in that movie, she had to share the screen time with another 11 actors and actresses, which makes it hard to call it her movie. Actually I suppose the same could be said about Kaminey, which means I have technically not seen any good Priyanka Chopra movies. Wow! That... is very scary...
Well... there we have it. Guess all I can do now is wish she would start putting all this talent to good use already. If not, I have some hope for Bluffmaster, but after that I am stuck with watching Pyaar Impossible and Love Story 2050, which is a pretty terrifying prospect.
What about Dostana? Don? Anything but Love Story 2050, please! Save yourself!
ReplyDeleteLOLs!! I know, razzle, trust me, I am just as appalled. But I have seen Dostana (and actually quite liked it in a brainless way) and Don. I tell you, there is no escape... :-/
ReplyDeletewe could call her a female Aamir.. she's still in the stage where she plays really well in really bad movies... right? i have seen her in several brainless movies like Dostana, What's your raashee, Pyaar impossible.. movies that are good to watch on days you don't want to take your brain out for a walk, but let it sulk at home lol
ReplyDeleteI so wish that were true Roxanita. But let's face it, Aamir managed to rebound after his first maybe dozen movies and started doing some good ones (Jo Jeeta, Akele Hum, Rangeela, AAA...) whereas my girl Priyanka has already done over 30 films and with the exception of SEI and Kaminey I don't think any of them can count as good ones :(
ReplyDeleteI do have high hopes for Saat Khoon Maaf, because at least Bhardwaj is somewhat more balanced in his male role vs female role distribution and focus, as opposed to what seems to me still, even now, a very hero oriented industry. We always say that about the South, but really, the North isn't too far behind. The day Bollywood starts writing good roles for women, and they're not about abuse, unhappy marriages and rape, will be a very happy day, and I sure hope Priyanka will be around to take advantage of it... A girl can dream, na?
yeah, but richard branson never went on his drunken knees in a party in dubai and called aamir khan "the most beautiful person in the world". surely that should account for at least 20 of her bad movies!(i think prianka chopra is a younger mallika sherawat/shilpa shetty....in a good way..hey I LIKE slightly trampy indian girls that go everywhere..do you mind?)
ReplyDeleteAha! Ramesh dear, thank you for providing me with the perfect example of comments that will get deleted going forward. Maybe my system is a little bit confusing, so there, this will answer it for all posterity :) Any comments that are insulting to anyone in any way, will get deleted. By all means, rubbish movies and bad acting all you want, I do it too and it's our right as film goers to have an opinion about a movie, good or bad. But I am not in the business of insulting people, whether they are stars or guests on this blog, so things like "trampy", and any other "assumptions" about one's intelligence or um... virtue, be they straightforward or stealthily implied, will get deleted. And that would be a shame, because people would miss out on the rest of your comment which is usually either hilarious or very informative or both.
ReplyDeleteOk, done lecturing, promise to not bring up the topic again, but I think this explains my opinion about "bad manners" better, what say? (BTW loved the bit about calling AK the most beautiful person in the world, hilarious mental picture! :D)
Hey I would recommend 'Aitraaz' to you. You might like it. But please don't go for 'Love Story 2050'. It might make you forget her. )
ReplyDeleteAnd yeah, I wanted to ask you which avataar of hers in 'What's your rashee' did you like the best?
Hey Shazia, thank you for the visit. I was thinking about getting Aitraaz, I think one of the online companies I buy from has it very cheap, so I might as well. :)
ReplyDeleteAvatars from WYR? I don't remember it very well, I was so disappointed in the movie because I had liked all of Gowariker's films I had seen before that (even Baazi! :D). But the only character that made an impression (other than the Leo artist girl who danced something very contemporary and very cool looking, and was actually pretty cool herself), was the rich girl. And the movie disappointed me greatly there too, because she makes such a good point before putting on her crazy act, which is that she wants people to see beyond the fact that she is rich, and of course, the hero doesn't... In terms of script writing that just puzzled me. Why bring that up if you're not going to use that point to prove that the hero is not as shallow as all the others?... :-/
Priyanka did a great job playing all those characters. It's too bad that (just like in Anjaana Anjaani) the movie simply let her down... :(
Aww, thank you Alesum! Another Priyanka fan, I take it :) Welcome!
ReplyDeleteOh, I loooove Priyanka! She's one of the few beautifull actresses that can emote and actually ACT from the current batch of young stars. I love how healthy she looks, and that you can't count her ribs when her midrift's bared :)
ReplyDeleteAnd the point you made about her movies makes me so sad, because it's spot on. She's so great, why doesn't she have more better roles? Hers was my favourite story in S-E-I, and she was wonderful in Kaminey. The girl can act, why don't the producers use it? Is it enough for an actress to be white, size 1, without much charisma?
And I actually enjoyed WYR, mailny because of her. We Priyanka fans can't be very picky about her movies (and it was still better than Aap Ki Khatir etc).. but I must admit to having a soft spot for Harman. I know he can't act much (yet!), but I'm so desperate for new faces in BW I take what I can get. Plus he looks really good, reminds me of Hrithik. I haven't watched many of Hrithik's movies, 'cuz they look like they may really scar me for life :D
Have you seen Dabangg? Because I'm currently crushing on Sonakshi Sinha. Have high hopes for the girl :)
Remini!! Hey girl! I'm glad you share my disappointment with her choice of roles (SEI and Kaminey are the two exceptions for me too), I am still hoping she'll get choosier now, and at least she gets points for choosing roles that are different from each other, at least she won't get typecast. But WYR I still have no love for, mostly because of the tremendous potential that movie had. See, a film like Anjaana Anjaani doesn't bother me because I have no expectations from it, but WYR... I was really excited for that one. Oh well...
ReplyDeleteBtw your comment about Harman followed by your assessment of Hrithik's movies cracked me up because it got me thinking: what would be more traumatizing? Harman in anything or Main Prem Ki Diwani Hoon... Hm... It may end up in a tie, and believe me, I find Harman less than tolerable :)
Ah, and Dabangg - loved it! :) But I think we'll have to see beautiful Sonakshi act some more to decide how good an actress she is :) The movie was still tons of fun, but it belonged to the guys.
Hahaha!! This is cute and funny.
ReplyDeleteMy girl crush on Bips scares me too! So I can relate :D
(R)hey!!
ReplyDeleteI resent that! I mean, I know everyone is entitled to their opinions and all, but comparing Harman to a box of Cheerios? Really? That's not very nice-- Cheerios are amazing! :P
(No but really, haven't you ever had those delicious little honey-coated round pieces of heaven?)
In all seriousness, though, I don't think you should be too scared. I mean, we are allowed to have some crushes that are purely superficial, right? Right?!?!
*starts to think very seriously about her Kunal Kapoor crush*
Nicki, you bring up another scary one with Bipasha. I do like her too. And to fuel your girl crush on her, I really recommend Pankh, it's tightly packed with Bipasha gorgeousness!
ReplyDeleteLOLS!! Ciaras, you alway crack me up! But maybe I should have specified I'm not a fan of cereal in general, and of Cheerios in particular. Plus I had already used my vacuum cleaner metaphor for charmless actors, and this was the only other one that came to mind. But hey, apparently some people like Harman, just like some people like Cheerios, so who be I to fight it?... :)
Hey, at least Kunal has been in some pretty good movies so far... Meenaxi, Rang de Basanti, Aaja Nachle (ok, I'll probably get sued for calling that a good movie but what the hell, I like it!). Either way, let me assure you, there is nothing superficial about my Priyanka crush... er... well, at least it's not ALL superficial... :-/
Oh Dolce, nice post and I adore that SEI song of hers, I think it's marvelous!!
ReplyDelete:) Thanks Gauri! And welcome!!!
